CHELSEA FC : Mourinho on bringing Carvalho into line

/noticias.info/ It has been reported as an early test of his ability to manage this season’s extensive squad and with the candour that has characterised his time at Chelsea, José Mourinho has lifted the lid on how he responded to the interview given in the past week by Ricardo Carvalho.

The centre-back who joined Mourinho in moving from Porto to Chelsea last summer was widely quoted midweek as not understanding why he wasn’t in the team that played Wigan. Other related thoughts were also given.

Carvalho has since issued a public apology for his comments. Now Mourinho has revealed details of two separate meetings — one with the player before Wigan and one with the entire squad on Thursday .

While not repeating the exact words spoken, the Chelsea boss explained: “I had a meeting with him last Saturday. I was very, very clear and objective. That is why I was very surprised with his interview on Tuesday.

“That is why when he said he couldn’t understand me, I answered that he must have a problem and he should do an IQ test,” he added, standing by his strong reaction of a few days earlier.

“I told him he should do an IQ test because he has worked for me for four years and has a lot of experience of me. He knows the way I work this kind of situation and that is why I think he was not very clever.”

Mourinho let it be known that during his pre-Wigan meeting with Carvalho, he had explained that the decision to go with John Terry and William Gallas as the centre-back pairing was influenced by their record together last season. Such was their form that it took until late January before they even conceded a single goal.

“It is pure mathematics. You don’t need to be clever to understand it. It is not philosophy, it is pure statistics. And I told him that on Saturday. I was surprised when he didn’t understand my option.”

In the meeting with the complete squad at Thursday’s training session, item one on the agenda was to welcome Michael Essien, item two was Ricardo Carvalho.

“I had a private conversation with him on Saturday, that was not enough,” Mourinho explained. “He gave a reaction to the world. Everybody could read it so I felt why not deal with it in front of the family. Of course I do not want to say what I said in that meeting but it was in front of everybody.

“Ricardo wanted to explain to the players but I gave him no chance. My meeting is my meeting. I speak, and only people I want to speak. I didn’t want him to speak. I think today he spoke with the players but in my meeting, no.

“I didn’t want an apology. I never apologise to my players and I don’t want my players to apologise to me. What I want is an open relationship. A relationship where face-to-face we are strong enough to say what we feel. My disappointment is just that. He couldn’t say it to my face and I was reading it by internet.”

Intriguingly, Mourinho can see a positive side to the unwanted disturbance at the start of the title defence in the effect it may have on the rest of the squad.

“It is a problem but I love this problem,” he said with enthusiasm in his voice. “You can imagine Essien, he arrives yesterday in the dressing room and in his first meeting with Chelsea, the manager killed Ricardo Carvalho in front of everybody! So this is the problem it is good to have because now Essien, if he doesn’t need an IQ test, understands me from the first moment.”

Terry and Gallas will remain the centre-backs for the visit of Arsenal. Mourinho had yet to decide whether Carvalho would make the squad. But he totally refuted any suggestion that by speaking out of turn, his compatriot may have shortened his Chelsea career.

“No chance of leaving, especially after the interview. I cannot let a player go or sell a player when he gives this kind of interview. If I do then it is easy for a player to think I want to leave, I give an interview against the manager.

“For sure he stays here and if he intends to leave, no offer will take him from Chelsea. He will have plenty of time to understand it.”

Carvalho’s apology makes it clear that staying and fighting for a place is all that is on his mind. Mourinho now considers the matter closed.

“If he understands me now, life will be easy for him.

“I don’t have to speak with him again. I don’t need to be in love with my players, I just need to have a correct relationship between the manager and the players with everything clear.”
