ORACLE: ThinkQuest International 2006 Challenges Students To Build The Best Educational Web Site
New Competition Now Open to Students and Teachers Worldwide
/noticias.info/ The Oracle Education Foundation today announced the opening of a new ThinkQuest competition, ThinkQuest International 2006, inviting students and teachers from around the world to take part in this unique collaborative learning experience.
This educational contest is open to students between the ages of 9 and 19 and their teacher-coaches from anywhere in the world. The program promotes collaboration and cross-cultural learning by encouraging students to team with peers in other regions to develop Web sites on educational topics. In the process of creating their site, students learn and practice their skills in research, writing, content organization and teamwork.
Ammu Irivinti, who assembled the 2004 winning international team that created the "Patent Wars on AIDS Drugs" Web site, sees ThinkQuest as an invaluable way to get children involved in technology and in their communities. "I'd like to see more people, especially in my state of New Hampshire, get involved with ThinkQuest," she states. "There is so much talent among young people and I'd like to see them enjoying and challenging themselves in competitions like ThinkQuest, while helping to build awareness of important global issues. By participating in ThinkQuest, my team helped raise AIDS awareness, as well as donations for AIDS causes in my school and around the world."
Teachers find that ThinkQuest fits in well with learning standards, particularly by providing ways for students to research, present their findings to an authentic audience and position themselves to receive feedback. "The competition is both incredibly challenging and fun, inspiring students to work even harder," says April Degennaro, ThinkQuest teacher and coach from Fayetteville, Georgia. "It allows teachers to collaborate with their students, so that they take a journey together. Educators are experts on how to find information, but not necessarily experts on a particular topic. ThinkQuest allows coaches to guide students in researching new information, instilling an incredible sense of teamwork as the team rises to the challenge of finding the resources to create their Web sites."
All submitted projects for ThinkQuest International 2006 will be evaluated through a two-step process including peer review and scoring by professional educators. Preliminary sites are due in March 2006, allowing teams up to seven months to build their Web sites. Entries that meet the evaluation criteria will be published in the popular ThinkQuest Library, created by students for students, available online at http://www.thinkquest.org/library. Winners will receive prizes from the Oracle Education Foundation, including technology awards and travel to the annual ThinkQuest Live event.
Students and educators interested in participating can find out more details at: http://www.thinkquest.org.
