TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SHOWCASES THE LATEST IN PCI EXPRESS WITH CREATIVE PC APPLICATIONS

/noticias.info/ DALLAS (August 19, 2005) – Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) showcases its expertise in PCI Express technology alongside partners and customers at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, California (August 23-25, 2005). In Booth #914, designers can see TI components in action in the following demonstrations:

• Altera Corporation with a compliant, low-cost PCI Express reference design developed in partnership using TI’s PCI Express PIPE PHY technology and Altera’s low-cost FPGA portfolio

• Cubix Corporation LLC with a corporate PC system that takes advantage of TI’s XIO2000 PCI Express-to-PCI Bridge

• TI’s consumer-focused, split chassis demonstration enabled by the XIO2000 and XIO1100 PCI Express PIPE PHY

PCI Express Demos

Altera, a leading, low-cost FPGA provider, and TI, a leader in SERDES technology, will showcase an example of a PCI Express x1 reference design using a Cyclone II FPGA and the XIO1100 PCI Express PIPE PHY. This demo will illustrate the PCI SIG configuration compliance test, which guarantees that the configuration space is implemented properly. The Cyclone II FPGA contains internal memory and a dedicated external memory interface with a direct memory access controller for high-speed memory transfers across the Cyclone II FPGA and XIO1100. The XIO1100, which provides the PCI Express physical layer interface, integrates the mixed signal circuitry that offloads it from the FPGA, reducing the total design cost.

With TI’s XIO2000, Cubix’s new concept personal computer (PC), the LaserStation PC, redefines the business workspace by separating the computer from the user’s peripherals, such as keyboard, mouse, monitor and various PCI control cards, via fiber optic cable up to 250 meters. Although users never see a fiber PC, full functionality is maintained with the components they actually need and use (i.e. keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.). The actual computer is located in an ultra-secure, controlled data center environment. This approach is ideal for businesses that wish to keep a high level of security surrounding their files and databases, or want to keep cost down when considering the number of computer workstations needed at any given site.

Play a video game on one monitor and check TV news on another with TI’s new version of its popular consumer-focused, split chassis demonstration enabled by the XIO2000 and XIO1100. The demo includes a modular I/O hub box in a standard mini-ITX chassis connected by an x1 PCI Express cable to a desktop PC. The modular I/O hub is built around the XIO2000 which supports a variety of multimedia functions. New for this IDF, the modular I/O hub will have built-in graphic capabilities made possible with a PCI graphic card behind the XIO2000, which allows a monitor connection directly to the hub versus the PC. This reduces the wire clutter to one cable between a user’s desktop device (the I/O hub) and the desktop PC. Another new feature in the demo will be the XIO1100 which is connected as a repeater. This piece illustrates that with the inclusion of a repeater, the distance between the I/O hub and desktop PC can be increased without degrading the signal. This gives the user greater flexibility when deciding where to store the bulky, noisy desktop PC, even giving the option of locking it away.
