UK: BOOZE TO BLAME IN BAD BOY ANTICS
/noticias.info/
At ten minutes to 4.00 p.m. this afternoon Humber Coastguard were contacted by the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade to alert them to a 15 year old local youth lying on the beach who had been in the water and was now in a serious condition at South Shields by the Waters Edge pub. The team had been passing the area at the time and had been flagged down by a member of the public.
An ambulance was rushed to the scene and it was discovered that a 15 year old youth, had gone into the water for swim after drinking heavily. On a dive entry he had injured his neck and has suspected spinal injuries. He has now been taken to South Tyneside Hospital.
A little later in the afternoon Humber Coastguard then received a call from the old South Bay Pool in Scarborough that a youth was in the water just by the new sea defence wall but was struggling in a heavy swell and could not get a foothold in order to get out of the sea and was being washed outwards.
Both Scarborough inshore and all weather lifeboats were immediately requested and the local Coastguard Rescue Team were also sent straight to the scene. It was reported from a caller to the Coastguard that a rope was being offered to the youth who had difficulty in getting hold of it in the swell.
A rescue helicopter was then scrambled which was going to RAF Leconfield to refuel before heading on to Scarborough. Shortly after another call was received from a member of the public to say the youth had managed to get ashore by the Holbeck rocks and an ambulance was sent to the area whilst the helicopter was stood down.
At that point three youths including the one from the water ran off past the approaching Coastguard team and it was clear that all had been drinking and had been wave dodging nearby.
Mike Green, Watch Officer at Humber Coastguard said:
"Alcohol can make some people think they can survive anything. In Scarborough there was clearly a good 6 - 7 foot swell on North promenade - a big swell. A very dangerous sea indeed. These youths could have got into much more difficulties that they bargained for.
As for the lad in South Shields, by the time he sobers up, he will have a very sore neck and possibly some more long term problems to come to terms with. It just isn't worth it. We are asking all responsible publicans who have pubs and clubs near the coastline to remind their customers of one simple message. 'Don't drink and drown'."
