GAZA, Palestine, August 21,2005 (IPC)--President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) stressed today on the need to put a two state solution sketched out by the American president George W. Bush into motion.
In a press briefing, after a meeting with David Welsh, the US secretary Assistant in his office in Gaza Abbas said" " If this visit is to tell something, it indicates the American administration's concern with what is going on in our land, specially the Israeli pullout from Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank and the future of the region.
He added, the American administration not only is it concerned with the pullout but also with what will follow it, since it sent to the PA USD 50 million for the residential projects to create work opportunities. It also consented to send USD 30 million for the water projects.
" We highly appreciate Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's statement that Gaza is not the first and the last, yet it is the first and there are other steps to follow" Abu Mazen said.
He also pointed out that the American Administration shall demand the donor countries to subsidize the PA to enhance the economic and social situations in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
"In our meeting with Mr. David, we talked a lot about the coming stage and the measures that have to be taken such as freezing the settlements and the construction of the separation wall in the West Bank. All these matters and other ones will be discussed with the American Administration to end up with the implementation of W. Bush's vision of an independent Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel living in peace and stability" Abbas said.
On his part, the US secretary assistant David Welsh asserted that USA saw the Israeli disengagement as an opportunity to revitalize the "roadmap" and to take steps for a better future for the Palestinians and the Israelis.
" we do this to bring to action president George.W.Bush's vision for two democratic states for the Palestinians and the Israelis living next to each other in peace and security" David Welch, said in a press conference in the presidential compound in Gaza city.
