FORMULA 1 - RENAULT: Magic moments: Week of August 23

23 August 1997, Jacques Villeneuve took pole position for the Belgian GP driving a Williams-Renault. Jean Alesi’s Benetton-Renault was next to him on the grid. On 23 August 2003, Fernando Alonso took pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix.

24 August 1996, Jacques Villeneuve took pole at Spa in his Williams-Renault. Team-mate Damon Hill was second on the grid. One year later, Heinz-Harald Frentzen took his Williams Renault to 3rd position and a podium in Belgium. Team-mate Villeneuve finished fifth, and was credited with fastest lap. Gerhard Berger’s Benetton finished sixth. Finally, on 24 August 2003, Fernando Alonso took his first race win in the R23 in Budapest.

25 August 1979, René Arnoux took pole position in the Dutch GP in his Renault Turbo. Six years later in 1985, Ayrton Senna finished the same race in third position in his Lotus-Renault. Team-mate Elio de Angelis was 5th. On 25 August 1991, Riccardo Patrese finished 5th in Belgium in his Williams, while in 1996, Jacques Villeneuve took his Williams-Renault to P2, with Jean Alesi (Benetton-Renault) 4th, Damon Hill (Williams) 5th and Gerhard Berger (Benetton) 6th.

26 August 1984, Nigel Mansell finished the Dutch GP in 3rd position in a Lotus Renault turbo. His team-mate De Angelis was 4th, while Patrick Tambay’s Renault was classified sixth.

27 August 1989, at Spa, Thierry Boutsen took 4th place in his home Grand Prix at the wheel of a Williams Renault. Six years later, in 1995, Michael Schumacher claimed the win in the Ardennes at the wheel of his Benetton – while Damon Hill’s Williams finished second.

28 August 1982, at the Swiss GP held in Dijon, Alain Prost and René Arnoux locked out the front row in their Renault Turbos. Eleven years later at Spa, Alain Prost and Damon Hill repeated the performance in their Williams-Renaults. The following year, Damon Hill won in Belgium after the disqualification of Michael Schumacher. He also set fastest lap. His team-mate David Coulthard finished 4th. And last year, Jarno Trulli took pole in Spa while Fernando Alonso qualifying 3rd. notas_de_prensa_archivo
