Football Europe: Ferencváros struggle as trio set pace
/noticias.info/ MTK Hungária FC, Újpesti TE and Györi ETO FC lead an embryonic Hungarian NB I table which would be propped up by the country's most successful club, Ferencvárosi TC, were it not for pointless Kaposvári Rákóczi FC.
Hat-trick
Ferencváros's season got off to an inauspicious start when they were eliminated from the UEFA Cup first qualifying round by FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk of Belarus on 28 July, following it up two days later with a 1-0 home loss to FC Fehérvár on the opening day of the campaign. The capital club were then beaten 3-1 at Budapest Honvéd FC, new Brazilian striker Andre Alves scoring all three goals, before another hat-trick denied them maximum points on Sunday.
Worst start
Ferencváros led Pápa TFC 3-0 only for Ferenc Róth to haul the visitors level with an inspired second-half performance which saw him plunder a treble. One point from three games makes this Ferencváros's worst-ever start to a season, putting coach Csaba László under early pressure. Things are unlikely to get any easier on Saturday when they visit fourth-placed Zalaegerszegi TE.
United in town
By contrast, MTK have enjoyed a superb beginning, winning 2-1 at Rákospalotai EAC and 2-0 at home to Pécsi MFC before being involved in the pick of the Matchday 3 encounters last weekend as they travelled to champions Debreceni VSC. The hosts dominated large parts of the match, only to see MTK youngsters József Kanta and Péter Bonifert find the net in a 2-2 stalemate. Debrecen's next home fixture sees Manchester United FC arrive on Wednesday.
Two red cards
Despite red cards for Hungary defender Vilmos Vanczák in two of their three games so far, Újpest have collected seven points - Géza Mészöly's side defeating Balaton FC and REAC ahead of a 2-2 derby draw against Vasas SC. Vasas, in sixth with four points, will appear before the Hungarian Football Federation's disciplinary board as midfielder Zsolt Bárányos recently joined having also agreed a move to ZTE.
Big game
Vasas's only reverse came against a Györ team that subsequently drew with REAC and accounted for Pécs. Debrecen, with a match in hand, are Györ's visitors on Sunday. notas_de_prensa_archivo
