Intertoto Cup: Last-gasp goals deny Deportivo
/noticias.info/ Olympique de Marseille left it late to complete a stunning turnaround against RC Deportivo La Coruña, as Mamadou Niang's last-gasp goal ultimately decided a UEFA Intertoto Cup final soured by three dismissals.
Late drama
Niang scored with just two minutes remaining, hitting an angled drive beyond the reaches of José Molina. It gave the home side the lead for the first time in the tie, following the 2-0 defeat in Spain a fortnight ago. Deportivo were forced to pile players forward from then on and Wilson Oruma capitalised on the counterattack in added time to give the scoreline a more one-sided look.
Early breakthrough
Although in abject Ligue 1 form, 50,000 expectant spectators filed into the Vélodrome and, buoyed by the crowd, the teams started in frenetic fashion, with Franck Ribéry breaking the deadlock after just four minutes from a rebound after Molina had fumbled Taye Taïwo's free-kick.
Frantic spell
Marseille lost their composure and Jorge Andrade equalised on eight minutes, tapping in after Cedric Carasso parried Lionel Scaloni's close-range effort. Then Aldo Duscher and Ribéry were both sent off on 12 minutes after clashing, and with a wealth of space in midfield, Marseille always looked the most likely to take advantage.
Capdevila woe
The home side had to wait until the 65th minute to do so, when Abdoulaye Méïté out-jumped Joan Capdevila to head in. The Deportivo full-back's disappointment was deepened six minutes later when he was sent off for dissent, paving the way for a breathtaking finale as the French outfit sought to make their numerical superiority pay.
Breakneck finish
Three minutes later, Niang diverted Molina's attempted clearance into the net to make it 3-1, and still behind on the away-goals rule, Marseille pressed forward. With striker Pedro Munitis injured, the visitors were effectively down to eight by the time Niang finally added his second of the evening. Oruma then made it 5-1 on the night to seal the 2003/04 UEFA Cup finalists a berth in this season's competition. notas_de_prensa_archivo
