Football Europe: Atlético capture Calvo on loan

/noticias.info/ Club Atlético de Madrid have secured the services of left-back José Calvo from CA Boca Juniors on a one-year loan. The 24-year-old is due to arrive at the Vicente Calderón on Friday. Atlético are also thought to have tabled a €1.5m bid to ensure first option to buy the player, should he impress during his time in Spain.

Sevilla FC striker Carlos Aranda has returned to Albacete Balompié on a new season-long loan. The 25-year-old, who is under contract with Sevilla until 2007, also spent the 2003/04 campaign at the Carlos Belmonte, scoring nine league goals as the side avoided relegation. At that time, Aranda was on the books at Villarreal CF, and moved to Sevilla last summer, where he has found himself increasingly out-of-favour following the arrivals of Javier Saviola and Frédéric Kanouté.

England defender Jonathan Woodgate made his first appearance since joining Real Madrid CF a year ago when he came on as a late substitute in the Spanish side's 5-0 win over the Major League Soccer All-Stars at the Santiago Bernabéu. Woodgate, who joined from Newcastle United FC for €19.7m last August, was given a standing ovation when he replaced Iván Helguera four minutes from time. "It's been a very hard year for me but I've finally made my debut and obviously I'm delighted," said Woodgate.

Another All-Star side was in action in Zagreb last night when a Croatian First Division XI lost 2-0 to FC Bayern München. Zé Roberto and Roy Maakay were both on target in a match that raised €50,000 for UNICEF.

Olympique de Marseille midfield player Sylvain N'Diaye has joined Spanish Segunda División side UD Levante. The 29-year-old Senegalese international was a member of the Marseille side that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2004, in his first season at the club after joining from LOSC Lille Métropole. "N'Diaye is a good technical player who can liven our midfield," Levante sporting director Manolo Salvador said.

Striker Geoff Horsfield has signed a new two-year deal with Premiership outfit, West Bromwich Albion FC. The 31-year-old, who scored twice in the side's victory over Portsmouth FC last weekend, had been in the final year of his contract but will now remain at the club until 2007. "Geoff works hard, looks very sharp and he has scored some important goals for us," manager Bryan Robson said. "This is the reward for that and I'm delighted he's signed."

Sunderland FC have signed former RC Strasbourg midfielder Christian Bassila on a two-year contract. The 27-year-old had been due at the Stadium of Light on Sunday after cancelling his contract with the Ligue 1 outfit but delayed his arrival after reported interest from AJ Auxerre. He has now completed a move to the Premiership newcomers though, and manager Mick McCarthy is delighted with the signing: "He plays it simple, handles the ball well and breaks things up. He's a big, powerful midfielder."

Czech coach Bohumil Páník has returned to the helm of MKS Pogon Szczecin just three and a half months after leaving the Polish side. The 48-year-old had been due to join second division team LKS Lódz this week, but was persuaded to make a comeback by club owner Antoni Ptak. Páník’s successor at Pogon, Bogusław Pietrzak, resumes his original role as reserves and youth coach.

Hibernian FC have given Cardiff City FC permission to discuss terms with striker Derek Riordan after accepting an offer of around €1.4m from the English Championship side. The UEFA Cup contenders have turned down previous bids for the 22-year-old Scottish international, but the latest approach could see the player moving south. notas_de_prensa_archivo
