UEFA Champions League: Artmedia's baptism of fire

Difficult start
The Slovakian side, who overcame Celtic FC and FK Partizan to reach the group phase, will welcome the Italian giants for their opening Group H game on 13 September. Scottish champions Rangers FC play host to 2003/04 European champions FC Porto in the section's other Matchday 1 fixture.

Liverpool defence
That same Tuesday evening will see current title-holders Liverpool FC travel to Spanish newcomers Real Betis Balompié while their Group H rivals Chelsea FC kick off at home against RSC Anderlecht. In Group F, Real Madrid CF will start their bid for a tenth European Champion Clubs' Cup with a difficult trip to French champions Olympique Lyonnais.

Milan restart
Another highlight of the opening night will be the match in Italy between last season's beaten finalists AC Milan and Turkey's finest, Fenerbahçe SK. Also in Group E, 2004/05 semi-finalists PSV Eindhoven will entertain tournament debutants FC Schalke 04.

Wednesday games
Wednesday's Matchday 1 fixtures are dominated by big ties between Villarreal CF and Manchester United FC in Group D and Werder Bremen and FC Barcelona in Group C.
