UEFa Cup: Tromsø take time to triumph

/noticias.info/ Tromsø IL held their nerve to defeat Esbjerg fB on penalties to lead the way into the UEFA Cup first round.

Shoot-out victory
Having won 1-0 in Denmark a fortnight ago, Tromsø were favourites to win this second qualifying round tie. But Jerry Lucena's 17th-minute effort for EfB was the only goal of the night, including extra time, meaning a shoot-out was required, which Tromsø won 3-2. Their Norwegian compatriots - and EfB's fellow Fair Play entrants - Viking FK had a less nervous night, their 2-1 home win against Rhyl FC of Wales earning a 3-1 aggregate success.

B36 denied
EfB's Danish rivals FC Midtjylland are through, but were given a nervous time in the Faroe Islands. B36 Tórshavn were only 2-1 down from the first leg, and Bergur Midjord gave them an away-goals lead three minutes into the return. Razak Pimpong and Dennis Soerensen ensured the visitors led at the break, by which time B36's Bardur Joensen had been sent off, though Allan Mørkøre later gave them a 2-2 draw on the night.

Ukrainian delight
Ukraine's two entrants FC Metalurh Donetsk and FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk both made smooth progress. Metalurh, already 3-0 up against Hungary's MFC Sopron, won 2-1 at home tonight, while 2004/05 group stage entrants Dnipro followed up a 4-2 win in Armenia at FC Banants with a 4-0 triumph.

Levski comeback
It was also a good day for Bulgaria. PFC Levski Sofia trailed NK Publikum having lost 1-0 in Slovenia two weeks ago. But Hristo Yovov scored twice before Valeri Domovchiyski ensured a 3-1 aggregate success. PFC Litex Lovech were in Croatia having won the home leg against HNK Rijeka 1-0. Jean-Philippe Caillet's penalty for the visitors just before the break was vital, as although Petar Krpan scored on 64 minutes and Krunoslav Rendulic levelled the overall score in added time, Litex progressed on away goals.

Bucharest double
Romanian clubs too are celebrating, but it was a close call for FC Dinamo Bucuresti. Having beaten AC Omonia 3-1 in the first game, they were warm favourites to come through the return in Cyprus. But Kostas Kaiafas and Stelios Christou struck in quick succession on the half-hour to give Omonia an away-goals lead, meaning Dinamo were grateful for Claudiu Niculescu's 55th-minute strike. AFC Rapid Bucuresti, meanwhile, were 3-0 up before they visited Macedonian side FK Vardar, so a 1-1 draw tonight was sufficient.

Golan hits heights
However, there were mixed fortunes for Israeli teams. Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC, the highest first-leg winners with a 5-0 win in F.Y.R. Macedonia against FK Baskimi, went one better at home tonight. Omer Golan scored a hat-trick to make the aggregate margin 11-0.

Domžale drama
FC Ashdod, though, are out in heartbreaking fashion. Slovenian leaders NK Domžale drew 2-2 in Israel two weeks ago, and although Ashdod led the tie 20 minutes from time when Emanuel Ebiede scored, Nikola Nikezić claimed a last-gasp equaliser to send Domžale through on away goals.

Teplice heroics
Jirí Mašek was the hero for FK Teplice as his last-gasp strike took them past FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk. After a 1-1 draw in Belarus, Emil Rilke gave the Czech side the lead tonight 56 minutes in. However, Pavel Verbír missed a penalty eight minutes later and Hamlet Mchitarjan then equalised. It seemed extra time would be required, but Mašek had other ideas.

Draw date
There was not quite so much drama across the border in Slovakia, as Groclin Grodzisk Wielkopolski came away from FK Dukla Banská Bystrica with a goalless result that secured a 4-1 aggregate victory. The draw is at 13.00 CET on Friday in Monaco. notas_de_prensa_archivo
