LIVERPOOL FC: RAFA HAILS EURO STAR GERRARD

/noticias.info/ Rafael Benitez has praised Steven Gerrard after the Liverpool captain was today named UEFA's most valuable player of last season.
Gerrard collected his award at a ceremony in Monaco this afternoon and his manager believes the accolade is fully deserved.

"For sure, I agree with UEFA's decision in giving this award to Steven," said Benitez in an exclusive interview with Liverpoolfc.tv.

"He was an important player for us right through last season's Champions League competition. In the final, especially, he played midfield, right wing and right full-back, as well as scoring the goal that kick-started our comeback. His goal gave the rest of the team the power and strength to believe we could win the cup.

"Everyone will also remember the goal he scored against Olympiacos earlier in the competition. This was a fantastic strike in terms of technique but more importantly it came at the right moment when the pressure was really on.

"He is always a key player for us and our team is built around him. He deserves all the plaudits that come his way."

Benitez also revealed that Gerrard remains a doubt ahead of Friday's Super Cup Final against CSKA Moscow.

The skipper missed the midweek Champions League qualifier after injuring his calf in the Premiership win over Sunderland.

"It is only a possibility that Steven can play," added the boss. "He wants to play and I want him to play. But we have to be careful and we'll speak to the doctor before any decision is taken." notas_de_prensa_archivo
