World Bank President on one-day Visit to Bangladesh

/noticias.info/ Dhaka, Sunday August 21, 2005 - World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz wrapped up his first visit to South Asia as President of the World Bank with a stop in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

On arrival he had words of appreciation for the South Asian country: "I have heard some remarkable stories of success from Bangladesh – especially successes in the areas of girls' education and women’s empowerment. I hope to meet some of the citizens who represent this progress during my visit, albeit a short one."

Wolfowitz said that he had also been impressed by Bangladesh's noteworthy progress in health and education for the poor, particularly for poor women and girls. "Much of that progress has been accomplished by elements of society, acting on their own initiative," he said.

"But even with these gains, the path to nationwide poverty reduction is not easy," said Wolfowitz. "Much more will be accomplished if all Bangladeshis can unite for the common purpose of the poorest people of this country. I am here to ensure that the World Bank continues to assist Bangladesh in overcoming these challenges. And that we can build on your success."

Wolfowitz said the World Bank hoped to remain an active partner for Bangladesh as it pursues its development agenda. notas_de_prensa_archivo
