Football Europe: Serie A pair begin with wins
/noticias.info/ ACF Fiorentina and AS Livorno Calcio both recorded 2-1 victories at home on the first day of the new Serie A season, against US Sampdoria and US Lecce respectively.
Toni penalty
Fiorentina led 2-0 by the 30th minute against Sampdoria thanks to goals from Stefano Fiore and Luca Toni. Former Valencia CF midfield player Fiore put the Florence side ahead with a perfectly-placed header after 13 minutes. The home side enjoyed large spells of possession and Italian international Toni doubled their advantage from the penalty spot 17 minutes later. Sampdoria reduced the deficit 16 minutes from time through Aimo Diana, although Fiorentina substitute Valeri Bojinov could have made the game safe before the final whistle but was denied by the post.
Palladino pounces
Earlier in the afternoon, Raffaele Palladino got the winning goal on his Serie A debut to give Livorno victory against Lecce. Livorno captain Cristiano Lucarelli, last season's leading scorer in Serie A with 24 strikes, scored the first goal of the new Italian league season when he drove home a long-distance right-footed shot after 12 minutes. Alex Pinardi levelled from the penalty spot in the 39th minute, but Palladino, on loan from Juventus FC, ensured a winning start for Livorno just after half-time. notas_de_prensa_archivo
