IBM X3 Architecture Proven Top Platform for Virtualization

IBM xSeries 366 Outperforms HP AMD Opteron-Based Server

/noticias.info/ ARMONK, NY -- Aug 24, 2005 -- IBM announced today that its line of X3 Architecture-based servers offers superior virtualization performance over HP's AMD Opteron-based ProLiant servers. In a real-world benchmark from VeriTest, the X3 Architecture-based IBM xSeries 366 outperformed a similarly configured and priced HP AMD Opteron-based ProLiant server, delivering response times that were up to 41 percent faster.

The X3 Architecture, introduced in February, is the culmination of a three-year, one hundred-million-dollar development effort to bring mainframe-inspired capabilities and sophisticated high-end technology to the company's next-generation 64-bit Intel Xeon processor MP-based xSeries servers. X3 Architecture servers hold many additional leadership industry standard benchmarks.

The recent benchmark from independent testing firm VeriTest further indicates that IBM's X3 Architecture is ideal for virtualization. VeriTest measured the performance advantages of the x366 for virtualized environments, running a "real-world" mixed application virtualized environment for VMware ESX Server 2.5.1. VeriTest found that Intel Xeon-based IBM xSeries 366 server outperformed a similarly configured and priced AMD Opteron-based HP ProLiant DL585 server on Exchange and SQL workloads, delivering response times that were up to 41 percent faster.

As today's VeriTest benchmark shows, X3 Architecture delivers better response times for virtualized environments because of its unique memory architecture, which does not degrade in performance as quickly as the HP server. The HP server was configured with 2.2 Gigahertz single-core processors because the current VMware release doesn't yet support dual-core technology. Further, the four-way systems tested were equipped with 16 Gigabytes of memory and the configured web-base pricing for both servers was within three percent of one another.

The x366, combined with IBM's chipset technology expertise, can improve overall system performance compared to the previous generation by up to 47 percent when 64 Gigabytes of memory is used.(1) IBM incorporates a custom chipset into its Intel-based servers, enabling IBM's xSeries offerings to vastly outperform the competition. The x366 eliminates the price discontinuity between two-way and four-way commercial platforms and is optimized for virtualization, server consolidation and enterprise applications.

IBM also unveiled today the IBM eServer x260, a high performance 7U server designed for storage-intensive applications and the latest in a planned family of dual-core capable servers based on the X3 Architecture. The x260 supports up to 3.6 Terabytes of internal Serial Attached SCSI storage.
