COMPUTER ASSOCIATES GRANT BOOSTS TECHNOLOGY ACCESS FOR AT-RISK CHILDREN
Grant Outfits Computer Lab at Overtown Youth Center Through South Florida Technology Alliance 2005 “Good Will Alliance” Program
/noticias.info/ ISLANDIA, N.Y., and MIAMI, FLA., August 26, 2005 – Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) and the South Florida Technology Alliance (SFTA) today announced that CA has awarded Overtown Youth Center (OYC) a $15,000 CA Community Grant. OYC, a non-profit program serving at-risk children and adolescents from Miami, was selected through its partnership with Alonzo Mourning Charities (AMC), a beneficiary of the SFTA 2005 “Good Will Alliance” program that raises corporate support for community causes.
OYC is located in the heart of Miami's inner city and provides a safe environment for children and families with in-school, after-school, weekend and summer programs. The center empowers children through academic and recreational enrichment and follows them from a young age through their high school graduation. CA's donation will be used to equip a lab with computers, network and Internet access, educational software and printers in support of OYC's Grow IT 2005 project. The project's mission is to increase technology access for young people as a means to enhance their education.
“We are excited about the partnership with Computer Associates and SFTA, and believe that a state-of-the-art computer center will bridge the digital divide in our community,” said Carla Penn, executive director of Overtown Youth Center. “We look forward to unveiling our 'new and improved' computer center.”
"At CA, we believe in building strong communities where all children have access to educational opportunities that will help them reach their maximum potential," said Robert McCarthy, vice president and regional manager for Computer Associates in Florida and in the Caribbean. "As one of the world's largest management software companies, we are keenly aware that access to technology is critical to the success of today's young people. We are proud to support Overtown Youth Center's Grow IT 2005 project and the organization's mission, and we thank the South Florida Technology Alliance for facilitating this partnership.”
The South Florida Technology Alliance (SFTA), a non-profit business forum that fosters the growth of IT hardware, software and services, is helping to affirm that the technology industry in South Florida is a good partner in the community.
"The leaders of SFTA's member companies are eager to support worthy causes through donations of funds, hardware, software and technical support," said Joel Ledlow, SFTA president and CEO of Acarra. “We are pleased to help connect these businesses to charitable organizations in need of technology.”
