India R&D Drives Motorola
/noticias.info/ Bangalore, 23 August 2005 - In a meeting with journalists, visiting Motorola Inc chairman & chief executive officer, Mr. Edward J. Zander and the company’s executive vice president & chief technology officer, Ms. Padmasree Warrior, underscored the importance of local talent in the technology giant’s R&D initiatives.
Motorola established its R&D facility at Bangalore in 1991 and today has the largest, most versatile and fastest growing R&D presence in the country among all telecom MNCs. The company has also identified India as a technology development (R&D) base, a fact that is reflected in its scope and scale of operations in India. Its development centers at Bangalore and Hyderabad work on core technology and software development for next generation wireless infrastructure technologies and infrastructure applications. Motorola has rapidly grown its R&D presence in the country. Between April and July 2005 it launched Motorola Labs, expanded the presence of its Global Software Group to Hyderabad and launched new facilities for its Core Network Division (CND) and Embedded Communications Computing (ECC) businesses. All of this represents very high-end cutting edge software development and R&D work.
The mandate of Motorola Labs in India is to engage in applied research in the areas of converged networks, autonomic networking, enterprise applications, embedded systems and physical sciences. This research focus supports Motorola’s vision of Seamless Mobility : easy, un-interrupted access to information, entertainment, communication, monitoring and control. Motorola Labs India research centre joins the Labs’ global team in creating the technology, applications and the unifying architecture to realize Motorola’s vision of Seamless Mobility.
The new R&D center in Bangalore brings under one roof the research and development capabilities of Motorola’s Core Networks Division (CND) and Embedded Communications Computing (ECC), both part of Motorola Networks. The center’s focus is on new telecom switching technologies and products across CDMA and GSM/UMTS networks, as well as driving seamless mobility enabling solutions and embedded computing capabilities for network servers. Encompassing over 117,000 square feet, the center is the second largest Motorola R&D facility in India.
The Global Software Group (GSG) is the Research & Development arm for software. It does cutting edge work for the entire range of Motorola’s products, including next generation wireless and broadband technologies, software platforms and application frameworks. GSG India is playing a critical role in the evolution of the telecommunications industry. Its mandate is to find ways to make software an integral part of everything Motorola does, whether used as a tool, as a part of Motorola’s products or as a separate unbundled software product and provide leadership in productivity, quality and software engineering. The Motorola Software Center has the distinction of being the first software center in India to achieve SEI CMM Level 5 and was the first commercial software organization in the world to do so. It is also the first organization in the world to achieve SEI CMMI Level 5 on a continuous process.
