Motorola Demonstrates Unique E-education Pilot to Hon’ble President of India
/noticias.info/ NEW DELHI – 25 August 2005 -- In a meeting with the Hon’ble President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Motorola demonstrated a unique e-education project at Rashtrapati Bhavan through its wireless broadband solution CanopyTM using i-Grandee Software. The Hon’ble President interacted live with students at an underprivileged school in South Delhi.
As part of the company’s corporate social responsibility program, this initiative will enable school children in remote areas access to quality education. Using its CanopyTM Wireless Broadband technology, Motorola will connect teachers and students by providing real time video and audio feeds to a cluster of recipient schools from a classroom in a nodal school.
Motorola will be responsible for providing the broadband wireless link and the computers/software for connecting nodal and recipient schools. The curricula and content will be provided by the nodal school and made compatible to Internet through a NGO partner. Motorola has chosen Ritinjali as the NGO partner for the first pilot in Delhi.
“Around the world, beyond business, Motorola is committed to making an enduring difference to the countries and communities it operates in. Education is one of India’s key socio-economic imperatives. I am delighted that we could show a demonstration of the first pilot program to the President, Dr. Kalam” said Zander.
Mr. V Ponraj, Director - Technology Interface, at Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “We have seen a demonstration of the link between Rashtrapati Bhavan and the school, 12 kms away from here. Motorola’s CanopyTM is one of the solutions in the WIMAX technology which has been tested”.
Mr. Amit Sharma, vice president, regional management, South & South-East Asia, Motorola Inc. said “Motorola proposes to launch this exciting project in a phased manner. We foresee up to four pilots in two phases, which will give the CSR initiative width (geographical expanse acquired by a mix of remote locations in different parts of the country) and depth (the number of Recipient schools reached by the initiative in far flung locations). Pilots will run for a year, post which Motorola will apply the learning, graduating the pilots to longer haul CSR initiatives”.
Professor N Ramachandran, Director – Periyar PURA Project, said, “To start with, we will use Motorola’s wireless broadband solution CanopyTM to connect 7 villages. Later, we will connect all the 65 villages under our PURA project using this effective solution”.
CanopyTM Wireless Broadband is a proven, always on, high speed broadband solution for cost-effective connectivity. This technology will be deployed in both pre-designated nodal and recipient schools. Motorola will be responsible for providing the broadband wireless link and the computers/software for connecting the schools. For most students, this will be the first real educational opportunity accessible to them. The initiative will bridge the gap in primary and secondary education standards between schools in rural and urban areas. This ties in directly with the Government’s accent on e-education, to address a major need of the country.
