FORMULA 1 – BAR HONDA: Button looking to repeat 2004 podium at Monza
/noticias.info/ Twelve months ago Jenson Button and Takuma Sato were only beaten by the two on-form Ferraris in Italy – Jenson finishing third and Taku hot on his heels in fourth place.
Those results were significant steps in B.A.R Honda’s ultimately successful chase for second place in the 2004 Constructors’ Championship.
"We had a very good race in Monza last year,” recalls Jenson. “We finished on the podium and I am looking forward to racing there this week following our strong performance in Turkey. The fans are very passionate about the sport and the atmosphere is always great over the race weekend. We had a positive weekend in Turkey and I'm sure we can improve our pace and have a competitive weekend in Monza."
Located in a leafy royal park, the 5.793km Autodromo Nazionale Monza is bursting with motor sport tradition and remains one of the most challenging circuits in the world. Possessing a unique character and ambience, Monza is Formula One’s oldest track and despite being altered from its original layout in the interests of safety, it is still the fastest.
Featuring long, high-speed straights interspersed with tight chicanes, and culminating with the famous final sweeping bend ‘Parabolica’, it’s a low-downforce circuit with a smooth track surface. Due to the pace of the circuit, cars must be set up with the lowest downforce levels possible without causing stability problems under braking. They must also be able to ‘ride’ the Monza curbs effectively and remain well-balanced without too much understeer at high speed. In addition, good traction is important for exiting the revised Rettifilo and Roggia chicanes effectively and braking must be optimised to cope with the very high temperatures generated when drivers slow from top speeds of around 370kms to negotiate these low-speed sections.
“Monza is a very unique circuit and easily the fastest in the F1 calendar in terms of speed,” explains Takuma. “The Italian Grand Prix weekend has traditionally seen lots of exciting racing so we can hope to see more of that. We’ve had a strong test during our two days at Monza last week so we are looking forward to challenging in the race at the weekend.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
