FIFA WORLD CUP: England's Terry throws the towel in
/noticias.info/ England confirmed today that central defender John Terry will miss the Group 6 qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland and possibly the following four weeks. The Chelsea FC captain, who sustained a knee injury in Saturday's Premiership defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC, has returned to Stamford Bridge. Midfielder Steven Gerrard, who missed Liverpool FC's UEFA Super Cup success against PFC CSKA Moskva last Friday with a calf problem, trained separately on Tuesday with England physio Gary Lewin.
England occupy second spot in Group 6, two points behind a Poland side who also lost one of their key figures today. Bayer 04 Leverkusen midfielder Jacek Krzynówek underwent knee surgery on Friday and will not recover in time for Saturday's visit of Austria, although there is a slight chance he could be fit enough to tackle Wales on 7 September. Liverpool FC goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek has long been ruled out.
Belgium's hopes of defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday were dealt a blow today as Philippe Clément (knee) and Emile Mpenza (infected leg) were ruled out of the Group 7 qualifier. Both players are doubtful for the home match against San Marino the following Wednesday, too.
Brøndby IF and Denmark defender Per Nielsen will be out for six weeks after breaking his jaw. The 31-year-old will miss the start of the Danish club's UEFA Cup campaign as well as World Cup qualifying ties against Turkey and Georgia. FC København's Lars Jacobsen replaces Nielsen in Morten Olsen's plans.
Israel have been forced to alter their squad for Saturday's Group 4 showdown against Switzerland in Basel, adding Ygal Antebi as cover for left-back Adoram Keisi. The 31-year-old Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC full-back returns to the fold a year after winning his ninth cap in the 0-0 draw against France in Paris. Pini Balili could also make way for Lior Asulin in a tactical change.
An injury sustained in the second half of the Super Cup has forced CSKA Moskva midfielder Yuri Zhirkov out of the Russia party for their games against Liechtenstein and Portugal. FC Lokomotiv Moskva's Marat Izmailov, back in shape after injury, has been recalled. notas_de_prensa_archivo
