UNDER 21: SFA reacts to Whittaker error

/noticias.info/ The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has responded to the events which led to Steven Whittaker playing for Scotland in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Italy while suspended.

'Avoidable error'
SFA chief executive David Taylor said: "I have undertaken a detailed review of the circumstances that led to the player taking part in the match, and interviewed all staff and coaches concerned. An avoidable error was made, internal disciplinary action is being taken, and new safeguards are being put in place to ensure there is no prospect of a repetition.

Bonhof reassurance
"It is essential that our national teams can focus fully on playing football, without having to worry about the administrative side of things," Taylor went on. "There has been unfounded speculation in the media about the future of Rainer Bonhof as U21 coach. At a time when the U21s are maturing again into a very good outfit, Rainer is playing a key role in the development of the team. He has provided numerous players for the senior squad during his three years in charge and remains contracted until next year."

'Exciting talents'
Bonhof added: "There was an administrative error regarding Steven Whittaker, but it has no bearing on my commitment to the U21 team. There are some exciting talents coming through in Scotland and I am determined to help them fulfil their potential." notas_de_prensa_archivo
