ARSENAL: Head to head: Lehmann v Schwarzer
/noticias.info/ By Mohsin Khan
Arsenal travel to the Riverside Stadium on Saturday for a game which promises to keep both goalkeepers busy.
Jens Lehmann and Middlesbrough’s Mark Schwarzer have navigated comparable career paths — starting off in Germany before moving to England a little later.
Schwarzer, 32, began his career with Dynamo Dresden in 1994 before moving on to Kaiserslautern a year later. Bradford City then brought the big Australian international to English football in 1996 where he caught the eye of the then Middlesbrough manager, Bryan Robson, who spent over £1 million to take him to the North-East.
Arsenal’s German keeper was a product of the Schalke academy and spent the first decade of his career there, before AC Milan prised him away to the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza in 1998. A hugely frustrating year followed with just five league games before Lehmann was taken back to Germany with Borussia Dortmund. He spent the next four years before Arsène Wenger brought him to North London at the start of the 2003/04 season.
Both goalkeepers are big, commanding figures, who dominate the penalty area and are great shot-stoppers.
Unsurprisingly, Schwarzer, playing for a less successful side, made far more saves than Lehmann last year — 176 to the German’s 98 - despite having made just three more appearances.
Lehmann comes out on top in the goals conceded ratio, letting in 0.96 per game to Schwarzer’s 1.25.
The Boro goalkeeper fares best in the distribution stakes however but only just. He has a success rate of 41 per cent to Lehmann’s 38.
The Arsenal man shades it overall when you consider, he kept two more clean sheets despite playing three less games.
