CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Schaaf rues missed chances
/noticias.info/ Frank Rijkaard's FC Barcelona were made to work hard for a 2-0 victory at the Weserstadion in their first UEFA Champions League Group C game against Werder Bremen. Goals in each half from Deco and Ronaldinho, a penalty, helped the Spanish champions emerge triumphant. Home coach Thomas Schaaf expressed his disappointment after seeing his side waste several clear chances.
Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
It took us a long time to get into the game but after half-an-hour we managed to create something. We failed to use the chances we made and against Barcelona you can't afford to do that. There was more in that game for us. We were unable to recreate the pressure in the second half that we did in the final quarter of the first 45 minutes and that made the difference. We managed to create chances against Barcelona but we failed to use them. I'm not satisfied that we have come out of this tie empty handed. Udinese got a good win tonight, we now have to gather points against Panathinaikos.
Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona coach
It was a difficult tie but that was no surprise, they are strong opponents. That was to be expected, because the level of teams in the Champions League is high. We were better in the second half than in the first when we made too many mistakes which could have cost us. We spoke about that at half-time. We were more controlled in the second period and that is why we didn't concede a goal. It's a good result against a team who are capable of scoring goals - we allowed them too many chances but I can say I am happy with the outcome."
Christian Schulz, Bremen
We stopped showing so much respect for them after 20 or 25 minutes and on the whole produced a good performance. We didn't take our chances and that makes the difference against a team as strong as Barcelona.
Daniel Jensen, Bremen
After the penalty from Ronaldinho we ran out of steam. We didn't use our chances and failed to score. Barcelona were more effective. We must win our next game against Panathinaikos in Athens. notas_de_prensa_archivo
