FOOTBALL EUROPE: Hamburg halt Bayern streak
/noticias.info/ Hamburger SV finally ended FC Bayern München's record-breaking winning streak in the Bundesliga, a 2-0 home success inflicting the visitors' first defeat in 16 league matches and taking Thomas Doll's side within a point of the top of the table.
Fortunate opener
Felix Magath's Bayern team had extended their run of league victories to 15 with a 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek, but struggled to get into the game at the AOL Arena despite the return of Michael Ballack after a knee injury. Hamburg took the lead in the tenth minute as Piotr Trochowski - previously in Bayern's youth team - played a pass forward and the ball broke kindly off Bayern's Ali Karimi, falling perfectly for Rafael van der Vaart to calmly shoot past Oliver Kahn from ten metres.
Trochowski clincher
Ballack came close with a free-kick moments later, forcing Stefan Wächter into action, but all the visitors had to show for their first-half efforts were two long-range attempts from Brazilian defender Lucio that failed to trouble the Hamburg goalkeeper. Magath introduced Bastian Schweinsteiger and José Paolo Guerrero at half-time but the attacking changes failed to galvanise Bayern and the match was settled by a Hamburg counterattack two minutes past the hour. Sergej Barbarez's pass split the Bayern defence and allowed Trochowski to beat Kahn with a high shot.
Bremen close in
Elsewhere, goals from Miroslav Klose and Ivan Klasniæ allowed third-placed Werder Bremen to close to within two points of Bayern with a 2-1 win at home against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, while FC Schalke 04 moved fourth thanks to a 2-0 victory at home against Hannover 96.
