FIBA: VEN - Defending champs suffer shock defeat
/noticias.info/ CARACAS (Liga Nacional) - Reigning Liga Nacional champions Delfines de Miranda were dealt an upset as they lost their mini-series against Tiburones de Vargas 2-1.
Despite winning the first match 92-87 thanks to 29 points from Victor David Diaz, Delfines eventually lost the "Battle of the Sea" (Dolphins v Sharks) as Tiburones won the next two games 94-92 and 98-86, with Jermaine Walker scoring 45 points in total.
This maintains the Sharks' place as one of the best teams in the division, with nine wins and three defeats, although Guerros de Caracas remained top as they clinched their 11th consecutive triumph with a 3-0 series whitewash over Hipercarabobo.
On Friday night, Guerreros won 108-78 thanks to 27 points from Johnell Smith, then on Saturday they won 115-84, with 23 points from Hernan Salcedo, and finally five players netted scores in double figures in Sunday's 98-74 victory.
Lanceros da Monagas are on top in the Eastern Division after beating Guarico-based Estudiantes 3-0 in the series, while Macizos da Guayana beat Pescadores da Cumana by the same score.
In the Western Division, Buchones from Camibas beat Garceros from Portuguesa 2-1 in a very close series.
On Friday, Buchones needed two overtimes to beat Garceros 113-109 and they doubled their advantage on Saturday with a 82-79 victory, thanks mainly to a 17-point contribution from David Mosley.
Garceros won Sunday's consolation match 97-87, with Johan Pinero netting 26 points.
Finally, Lara-based Duros surprised league leaders Tanqueros da Zulia, beating them 2-1 in the series despite being the visitors.
