FIBA - Volgaburmash off to winning start
/noticias.info/ SAMARA (FIBA Women's World League) - Two-time defending champions Volgaburmash of Samara opened the final round of the FIBA Women's World League with a 75-45 trouncing of UNIMED de Ourinhos.
Basketball Club Habana, Dandenong Jayco Rangers and Gambrinus Brno also won their clashes.
Volgaburmash of Samara, who are hosting the final round, have dominated the women's game the past two years and they were rampant against UNIMED in their Group B encounter.
Volgaburmash have reinforced their team with some of the best players in the game, but it was Maria Stepanova, a member of their all-conquering campaign last season when they won their second straight World League, and EuroLeague Women, who shone brightest.
Stepanova led all scorers with 16 points and also nine rebounds.
French point guard Edwige Lawson had 15 points and Samara's big signing from Ros Casares, Spanish international Amaya Valdemoro, poured in 14 while also pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds.
UNIMED got a 13 points apiece from Micaela Martins Jacintho and Soeli Garvao Zakrzeski.
Gambrinus Brno, the team Samara defeated in a thrilling EuroLeague Women final last season, got their World League campaign off to a flying start with a 94-62 thrashing of UMMC Ekaterinburg in Group A.
Eva Viteckova, one of Brno's heroes in the Czech Republic side which captured the EuroBasket in Turkey last month, had 17 points.
Summer signing Delisha Milton of the USA had 24 points for Brno while Slovakia national team star Zuzana Zirkova weighed in with 13.
Dandenong Jayco Rangers of Australia were 66-60 winners over the WCBA All Stars in Group B, Emma Lee Randall pouring in 23 points.
Basketball Club Habana got 18 points from Yakelyn Plutin Tizon in a 76-67 triumph over WKBL in a Group A clash. notas_de_prensa_archivo
