INTER: WOME: "ETO'O DIDN'T TELL THE TRUTH"
/noticias.info/ APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Pierre Wome's news conference:
Can you tell us what happened in the moments after you took the penalty?
"I knew it would be tough if I had missed. Apart from my own personal regret, I think about what happened in the whole of Cameroon. I also think of my relatives who live there. I thought about them a lot and before going back to the dressing room at the end of the match I asked the police how they were. They told me they would take care of my family's security. The fans have caused some material damage, but the most important thing is that my family is okay."
Do your relatives have round the clock security now?
"Yes, that's right."
Did Wome return to Italy early because he was worried about his safety?
"If I have to admit it, yes."
It really was a tragedy...
"Yes, it really was. Football is important in Cameroon, too important. If everything goes well it's extraordinary. But if it goes badly... Also, we missed out on World Cup qualification at home, and this made the situation worse."
Can you understand the fans' reaction?
"It's incomprehensible because they also destroyed cars and houses they thought were mine, but which weren't actually mine. But what disappoints me most is what one of my team-mates - Samuel Eto'o, said after everything that has happened. I can't accept this. At Sydney 2000 I took the last penalty in the Olympic final. I scored and we became champions. I have taken others in the African Cup. Sometimes I scored, sometimes I didn't, and the fans were happy all the same. I'm really disappointed about what Eto'o said. He's a team-mate and I can't understand why he said certain things. No one wanted to take that penalty, neither him nor our captain. They were on the pitch with me, they know this." notas_de_prensa_archivo
