IOC Executive Board closes Jerome Young case

/noticias.info/ The IOC Executive Board this morning put a close to the Jerome Young case by taking the following decision:

- The athlete Mr Jerome Young (USA) is disqualified from the 4 x 400 men’s relay event of the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney.

- The United States Olympic Committee is ordered to return to the IOC the medal and diploma awarded to Mr Young for the 4 x 400 men’s relay event.

- The IAAF is requested to take the appropriate steps so that its records reflect the contents of this decision.

A long process

- September 2000: US team, consisting of Michael Johnson, Antonio Pettigrew, Angelo Taylor, Alvin Harrison, Calvin Harrison and Jerome Young, wins men’s 4 x 400m relay event at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. For reference, Jerome Young ran in the semi-final of the relay, but not in the final.

- September 2003: USOC confirmed that, on the basis of his own quotations reported in the Los Angeles Times, the identity of the so-called ”unnamed athlete” who had tested positive for a banned substance but was allowed to compete in track and field in Sydney, was indeed Jerome Young.

- February 2004: USATF recognised that Jerome Young was the athlete who tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in 1999 but had been cleared by a USATF panel to compete in Sydney. Consequently, the IAAF announced that it would launch a legal inquiry against USATF for having wrongly cleared Young. The IAAF also asked CAS to look into the matter.

- June 2004: CAS ruled in favour of the IAAF and confirmed that Young should have been ineligible to compete in Sydney.

- July 2004: the IAAF made a recommendation to the IOC that all members of the US relay team that won the Olympic gold in the 4 x 400m race be stripped of their medals. USOC and athletes Michael Johnson, Antonio Pettigrew, Angelo Taylor, Alvin Harrison and Calvin Harrison appealed the decision.

- July 2005: CAS upheld the appeal filed by USOC and the athletes against the decision of the IAAF to annul the results of the US men’s 4 x 400m relay team and stated that the results obtained by the athletes should stand. CAS further ruled that “it is the understanding of the Panel that only Jerome Young in the USA relay team should be stripped of his gold medal”. notas_de_prensa_archivo
