Human Rights Commissioner – presentation of report on Spain
/noticias.info/ The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Alvaro Gil-Robles, will present his report on the respect for human rights in Spain to the Committee of Ministers today. The report will be forwarded to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and be made public.
The 60 page report follows an official visit to Spain in April this year, during which the Commissioner travelled to Andalusia, the Basque Country and Catalonia in addition to holding official meetings with the national authorities in Madrid. In May, members of the Commissioner’s Office visited the Canary Islands and Ceuta.
The report examines the treatment of arriving foreigners, expulsion procedures and access to asylum, prison conditions, allegations of police brutality, the effective administration of justice, assistance to the victims of terrorism and the situation of the Roma amongst other issues.
The report concludes with recommendations to the Spanish authorities.
