PGA TOUR: Diary: Cink, Johnson search for 'A' games
/noticias.info/ Editor’s note: Stewart Cink is playing in his first World Golf Championships-Algarve World Cup in Portugal , teaming with Zach Johnson to represent the United States. The four-time PGA TOUR winner is taking time out from the competition each day to write a diary for PGATOUR.com. He wrote this installment Friday after the Americans carded a 70..
ALGARVE, Portugal -- We played solid today, but we just couldn't really get anything going. Our putts were right on the edge but never seemed to fall. It was just a lackluster day. We need to get some spark going here tomorrow because we’re halfway through this event. At the same time, though, you look at the leaderboard and we're only six shots out of the lead. So we're not that far back. In a stroke-play tournament, if I was seven shots back with 36 holes to play I would think, hey, I'm in the mix. So we have to continue to think that way.
We both hit our share of really good shots and we both hit a few bad shots. We’ve played pretty equally, both of us. So I think over the next couple of days, the weather is going to turn bad at some point and maybe we'll have a chance to move up a little. I think we're still feeling each other out in a way. We’re still trying to get our ‘A’ games going. We're not playing poorly. We're just not taking advantage of some opportunities. There are some holes that are some definite birdie holes and we're letting a few of those slip by.
Zach was hurting a little bit today, too. He had a neck problem that was bothering him. He definitely wasn't 100 percent, but he played well. I know he hit a ball out of bounds on No. 9 and he said that since his caddie has been working for him the last two years, he can't remember two shots he hit out of bounds. It’s not often that he does that, but it happens and we made double bogey there. But we came back with a couple of birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 so we rebounded well.
We were pretty tired yesterday so we didn’t do anything last night. The girls had been walking around a lot, and when we got back my wife was sound asleep. So we just got together last night with Zach and Kim and played some cards and had a pizza -- see, Italian again -- and took it easy. But it’s fun. We don't do that kind of stuff at a regular tournament very often. So we feel like we're getting a little closer to them and that's a big part of team golf. We played Spades and they played against us. I'm not a very good card player, and I messed up a couple times royally. I was paying attention halfway to the game and halfway to what was on TV, so I was pretty scatter-brained. The loss was definitely my fault. My wife let me know it, too. I guess I’ll have to redeem myself next time! notas_de_prensa_archivo
