FIBA Europe - Lietuvos third quarter romp kills off USVO
/noticias.info/ VILNIUS (EuroLeague Women) - US Valenciennes Olympic lost their 100% record in the EuroLeague Women on Thursday as they crashed to a Katie Douglas-inspired Lietuvos Telekomas Vilnius, 79-75.
The French giants went into the game having won all four of their opening games but just days after losing to bitter rivals Bourges on the domestic front, they were undone by one of the top players in the competition as Douglas, Lietuvos' star guard, poured in 27 points and dished out five assists.
USVO came into the game on the back of a French league defeat to bitter-rivals Bourges and suffered more heartache.
Rima Valentiene chipped in with 17 points for Vilnius, whose record is now 4-1.
K Cero ICP Kosice must be wondering if their luck is ever going to change in the EuroLeague Women after suffering a 72-58 defeat at Phard Napoli - their fifth successive defeat in the competition.
The Slovakian outfit had a nightmare start, trailing by as many as nine points in the first quarter but they battled back to lead 26-25 early in the second period on a Tiffani Johnson lay-up.
When a pair of Johnson free throws gave Kosice their biggest advantage at 42-34 20 seconds into the second half, the visitors must have thought they would finally snatch that elusive victory but it was not to be.
Phard, with the support of their home fans, came storming back to win.
Francesca Zara's jump shot started a 12-0 run which gave the Italians a 46-42 lead with 5:51 left in the third quarter.
Though Kosice kept it close for the rest of the quarter, the game eventually slipped away from them.
By the time Vanessa Bullet made a jumper with just under five minutes to go in the contest, Phard held a 65-50 advantage. There was no way back for Kosice.
Marlous Nieuwveen topped the scorers for Phard with 18 points, while Bullett had 16 to go with her seven rebounds.
K Cero ICP's Kelly Anne Mazzante led all scorers in the game with 21, while Johnson chipped in 14.
UMMC Ekaterinburg will not get 7ft giant Margo Dydek until January.
If they keep playing as they did on Thursday at Lotos Gdynia, they may not need the Polish superstar.
The Russian team improved their record to 3-2 in Group B of the EuroLeague Women with a 71-58 win at Lotos as Ekaterina Sytnyak and Suzy Batkovic paced the visitors' attack by each scoring 14 points.
Sytnyak also hauled down seven rebounds and dished out six assists as Lotos slumped to their third defeat in five games.
Agnieszka Bibrzycka's game-high 20 points for Lotos were in vain. notas_de_prensa_archivo
