SOUTHERN AFRICA TOUR: Immelman ready to carry Gary at NMI
/noticias.info/ South African Trevor Immelman joked that he would have to carry playing partner Gary Player during this week’s Nelson Mandela Invitational presented by Coca-Cola and hosted by Player at the Arabella Country Estate starting on Friday.
The 26-year-old, who tied for fifth at this year’s Masters, is paired with Player in the pro betterball medal competition over 36 holes.
Immelman said he would like to have a little side bet with World Cup partner Tim Clark, who is paired with Vincent Tshabalala, which he won along with Ernie Els in 2004.
“I’m sure Tim and I will have some sort of bet,” Immelman said. “I see he has a pretty strong team there so I’m going to have make sure Mr Player gets lots of sleep and eats healthy,” he laughed.
“I’ll have to ride him all the way to the finish line. We need a gameplan and have to have a chat this evening.”
Although the comment was made in jest, it did highlight that the players are still competitive when they are out on the course, despite the fact that the tournament is about raising money for the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund and the Gary Player Foundation.
“It’s an honour to be back here as I’ve played once before at Pecanwood and I enjoyed it then and had a lot of fun,” Immelman said.
“It’s great for me now as an established player to come back and give time to an incredible cause and it’s something I wanted to do all year and when the chance came I jumped at it.
“One of the things the organisers of this tournament really have got right is the fact that all of us come here keeping in mind that we are here for a cause; we are here to have a good time and make sure we raise money for charity and the golf is on the back of that.
“As long as it stays that way this tournament will grow from strength to strength because the more we, as professional golfers, make the celebrities and businesspeople feel at ease and at home and let them relax and have a good time they are going to keep coming back to support the event.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
