ARSENAL: Wenger puts his faith in Pascal
/noticias.info/ By Richard Clarke
Arsene Wenger is happy to persevere with Pascal Cygan at left back in the absence of Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy.
The latter pair have both been sidelined with fractures to the foot. The Englishman will not be back before the New Year and Frenchman is sidelined until February at the earliest.
Centre back Cygan has filled the breach in the past two games and his manager his happy with how he has performed.
“He is a positional player, an intelligent player and he gives something in the air that we don’t have that when he is not in the side,” said Wenger.
“We don’t expect him to create like Cole and Clichy can create when they go forward. You won’t get that from Pascal, he is more defensive. He plays like a centre back who is playing left back, I knew that from the start.
“But I feel we do not need too many players to go forward to score goals, so we can cope with it while Ashley Cole is not back.”
It is not an ideal situation, given that left back is a specialist position but, Wenger believes, the predicament could not have been avoided.
“It is bad luck,” he said. “How can you play three left backs? It is difficult because, at some stage, a player who does not have any competition is a dead man."
In addition to Cole and Clichy, Alexander Hleb is out for tomorrow’s game with Blackburn at Highbury. The Belarus midfielder is expected to be back for Arsenal’s Champions League tie with Ajax. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Eboue has recovered form the knee injury he sustained at Thun on Tuesday and will be available against Mark Hughes’ side. notas_de_prensa_archivo
