PGA TOUR: Former Alabama head basketball coach Sanderson talks golf
/noticias.info/ Editor’s note: In 12 years as head basketball coach at the University of Alabama, Wimp Sanderson compiled a record of 267-119 that included five Southeastern Conference titles. The man known for his plaid jackets also is an avid golfer who carries a 15 handicap. PGA TOUR media official Phil Stambaugh caught up with Sanderson earlier this year for this Q&A.
PGATOUR.com: How did you get started in golf?
SANDERSON: I bought a set of clubs and started fiddling around when I was about 20. I tried a few things and found out I couldn’t play very good. Still can't, but early on I fell in love with the game. I couldn't afford to go to a country club, so I just played on some public courses.
PGATOUR.com: Favorite golfing moment?
SANDERSON: The bunker shot I hit during a special event for charity at the Bruno’s Memorial Classic one year. We got to the sixth hole and I made 6 for 5 to halve the hole with Al Del Greco’s team. It was a $3,000 hole and in order to determine who was going to win the money, we each put a ball in the bunker and the shot closest to the pin won the money for charity for charity. When I do my radio show, I always say that when I crawled down into the bunker, a hush went over the crowd. And I knocked it close.
PGATOUR.com: Can you think of a dream foursome? Living or dead.
SANDERSON: Probably Dwight Eisenhower would be one. Tiger Woods would probably be one. And I guess George Bush, Sr. would be the last one.
PGATOUR.com: Who’s your favorite PGA TOUR player?
SANDERSON: I like Kenny Perry. He gives 10 percent of his earnings to Lipscomb University and my son coaches there.
PGATOUR.com: How often do you get to play?
SANDERSON: Oh, I will play, when the weather is good, three, four times a week.
PGATOUR.com: What is your best score ever -- and where did you shoot it?
SANDERSON: I don't have good scores. I've only broken 80 in my life three times. I don't really have a best place. I got to play Augusta one time with Bobby Knight but I don't even know what I shot.
PGATOUR.com: If you could have any PGA TOUR player’s swing, who would it be?
SANDERSON: Probably Ben Crenshaw's.
PGATOUR.com: Any course you would like to play that you haven't?
SANDERSON: I haven't played them all yet. I have not played Pinehurst No. 2.
PGATOUR.com: How many strokes would you ask for from Tiger Woods?
SANDERSON: Oh, I would have to have a stroke and a half a hole. From the tips I would need two.
PGATOUR.com: Which do you think is harder, playing tournament golf or coaching?
SANDERSON: Well, that's a good question. I think they're pretty close to equal. I think tournament golf puts a lot of pressure on you and is very difficult. For me, coaching was very difficult. For some coaches it was not. They are able to handle the pressures of it better than I did. notas_de_prensa_archivo
