Africa sets the pace in the promotion of women in sport

/noticias.info/ As part of the IOC’s policy of promoting women in sport, National Olympic Committees (NOC), International Federations and Continental Associations around the world have implemented measures to increase the number of women in leadership positions. Africa continues to set the pace in the promotion of women in sport as it is the only continent currently having a woman President and Secretary General of a NOC.

Zambia elects women NOC President and Secretary General
Last Saturday, the NOC of Zambia became the second in the world to elect women as President and Secretary General. Ms Miriam Moyo, former Secretary General and previously Vice-President, took over from IOC Member Patrick Chamunda as NOC President. Her colleague, former executive committee member and recently-elected member of the executive board of the African Hockey Confederation, Ms Hazel Kennedy, was elected Secretary General.

Further south in Lesotho, Ms Matlohang Moiloa-Ramoqopo has been NOC President for the past three years. In June, Ms Agnes Tjongarero, President of the NOC of Namibia, was elected Vice-President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa. This was the first time the association elected a woman to any of its senior positions.

Nine women NOC Presidents
There are now nine women NOC Presidents in the world, five of them in Africa, followed closely by Europe with three. There are also 15 women Secretary Generals, with five in Europe, four in the Americas and three in Africa. While Asia and Oceania have no women NOC Presidents at present, they do have several women Secretary Generals.

Mrs. Gunilla Lindberg, IOC Vice-President, is also the first-ever Secretary General of the Association of National Olympic Committees.
