NFL: EAGLES: Forward-Thinking Reid Has A Staff To Address
/noticias.info/ Andy Reid saw this coming three years ago, maybe longer. He knew that Brad Childress was an up-and-coming young coach, destined to be a head coach, and that some day he would leave the Eagles' staff.
That day has come. Childress is the new head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Great for him. He deserves the opportunity, and here is wishing him the best of luck.
The challenge for Reid is to make sure Childress' departure -- and a potential domino effect on this Philadelphia coaching staff -- doesn't set the Eagles back a hair in 2006.
As I write this, the Eagles haven't set a word officially about the next step here. But we're not foolish. We all know that Marty Mornhinweg is next in line for the job. He's had the title of Assistant Head Coach for three seasons and he's got an innovative, experienced offensive mind. Mornhinweg had input into the offensive script and success the last few seasons, so if he becomes the new offensive coordinator, nobody would be surprised and nobody would expect much of a difficulty in transition.
That's the good news. That's the encouraging news. Reid probably knew -- understanding how he thinks -- from the day he hired Mornhinweg that Marty M. would be the next step in the offensive coordinator progression. See, Reid understands the big picture, and he knew when he hired Rod Dowhower back in 1999 that Dowhower would be here for a couple of seasons before turning over the reins to Childress. And then when it became apparent that Childress was destined for a head coaching job, well, it just so happened that Mornhinweg was done in Detroit after a two-year stint as the head coach and that he would fit in very nicely here.
And so he has.
That's that. But here is where the domino effect factors in, and we won't likely know just how significant that will be until Childress gets around to naming his staff: How many current Eagles coaches will become part of the Minnesota coaching picture?
This is where Reid's understanding of the scope of the coaching move is going to pay off. Certainly, you'd figure, Childress will dip into the Eagles' coaching staff to take to Minnesota. He's worked side-by-side with the men here for years, through good times and through tough times. He knows them and trusts them and will probably want to go to battle with them in another city.
So if that is the case, Reid is going to have to fill another hole or two or three within his staff. It is the price of success, and the Eagles have had plenty of that in the last six years to the point now where some coaches who have been here during that time -- Childress, possibly Ron Rivera, now in Chicago -- are moving up the food chain to become head coaches.
So we'll see as the day progresses. The Eagles are quiet now, but that could change as the day moves along. There is food for thought to consider, internal changes that are significant. notas_de_prensa_archivo
