AUSTRALIAN OPEN – Match report: Serena Avoids Similar Fate
/noticias.info/ Monday, 16 January, 2006
by Luke Buttigieg
Two-time champion Serena Williams has avoided the fate that struck older sister Venus earlier on Day One, coming back from a break down in the third set to outlast Li Na of China.
The 2003 and 2005 champion looked set for an early night when she took the opening set and led with a break in the second set, but Li - who made the third-round in 2005 - refused to be brushed aside and delighted the crowd by fighting back to take the second set in a tie-break.
But after surrendering her serve in the first game of the decisive third set Williams won a lengthy and critical second game en route to taking four successive games as she reclaimed the momentum and won 6-3 6-7 (1/7) 6-2.
