AUSTRALIAN OPEN – Match report: Malisse Masters Youzhny

Belgian Xavier Malisse has overcome a second-set lapse to oust Russian Mikhail Youzhny on the Day One of Australian Open 2006.

In a tight affair, each of the first three sets lasted at least 45 minutes but, after putting his nose in front again by taking the third set, Malisse ran away with the fourth set to carve out a 7-5 5-7 6-4 6-2 victory.

Having never been beyond the third-round in four previous visits to Melbourne Park, Malisse prevailed in 169 minutes to set up a second-round battle with 2002 champion Thomas Johansson.
