MLB: Mets ship Benson to O's for Julio, Maine

RHP Benson dealt to Baltimore

/noticias.info/ The New York Mets tonight acquired righthanded pitchers Jorge Julio and John Maine from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for righthanded pitcher Kris Benson.

Julio, 27, went 3-5 with a 5.90 ERA in 67 games last year with Baltimore. In a career-high 71.2 innings, he allowed 76 hits, 50 runs, 47 earned, with 24 walks and 58 strikeouts. Jorge allowed only four of 24 (83 percent) inherited runners to score.

He is currently 2-1 with nine saves a 2.12 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Caracas Leones of the Venezuelan Winter League. In 17.0 innings, he has permitted 14 hits, four runs, earned, hasn't issued a walk and has notched 16 strikeouts.

Julio is also on the Venezuelan provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic.

The 6-1, 236-pounder has compiled 83 career saves, including a career-high 36 in 2003.

In 2004, Jorge recorded 22 saves in 26 opportunities and finished tied for seventh in the American League in saves. He also notched 70 strikeouts in 69.0 innings that season.

Julio went 5-6 with 25 saves and a 1.99 ERA in 2002 with the Orioles. In 68.0 innings, he yielded 55 hits, 22 runs, 15 earned, with 27 walks and 55 strikeouts.

Jorge is 11-24 with a 4.20 ERA in 281 games during his major league career. In 291.2 innings, he's permitted 275 hits, 156 runs, 135 earned with 133 walks and 257 strikeouts.

Maine, 24, was 2-3 with a 6.30 ERA in 10 games, eight starts for Baltimore last year. In 40.0 innings, he yielded 39 hits, 30 runs, 28 earned, with 24 walks and 24 strikeouts. In addition, he went 6-11 with a 4.56 ERA in 23 starts with Ottawa (AAA) of the International League. He pitched 128.1 innings, allowing 128 hits, 72 runs, 65 earned, with 42 walks and 111 strikeouts.

John was recalled from Ottawa on August 13th and earned his first major league victory in his second big league start that night, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory vs. Toronto.

Maine was Baltimore sixth round selection in the 2002 First Year Player Draft. The 6-4, 193-pounder has constructed a 2-4 mark with a 6.60 ERA in 11 major league games, nine starts. In 43.2 innings, he has allowed 46 hits, 34 runs, 32 earned, with 27 walks and 25 strikeouts.

Benson, 31, went 10-8 with a 4.13 ERA in 28 games last season for the Mets. In 174.1 innings, he permitted 171 hits, 86 runs, 80 earned, with 49 walks and 95 strikeouts. notas_de_prensa_archivo
