INDIANAPOLIS - Every year the NFL and the Colts recognize players for their performance both on and off the field. Below is a listing of some of the awards and the Colts players who have received them this year.
THOMAS W. MOSES, SR./NOBLE MAX AWARD
Every year, the Indiana media select one Colts player who has overcome adversity in his career, or whose on-field accomplishments exceeded normal expectations. This year, Colts Tight End Bryan Fletcher was selected as the 2005 Thomas W. Moses, Sr./Noble Max Award winner. Fletcher is
in his first season on the Colts active roster after participating in NFL Europe and spending the 2004-05 season on the Colts practice squad. This year, Fletcher has been an important contributor to the Colts offense with four touchdowns and 202 receiving yards.
ED BLOCK COURAGE AWARD
The Ed Block Courage Award is given to one player on each NFL team who has exemplified courageous play. The recipient is selected by his teammates and honored at an annual banquet in March. The proceeds from the banquet benefit the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation, which seeks to establish homes for abused children in each NFL city. The Colts established the Colts Courage House in 2000. Linebacker Cato June is the 2005 Colts Ed Block Courage Award Winner. Currently in his third season with the Colts, June has developed into one of the Colts leading tacklers and hardest hitters. With a team-high five interception in 14 games, June is the first Colts linebacker to earn Pro Bowl honors since 1987.
COLTS MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Colts 2005 Man of the Year is Quarterback Peyton Manning. The two-time league MVP was selected for his record-breaking season and his continued service through the PeyBack Foundation (www.peytonmanning.com). The national Man of the Year will be announced in the coming months. Each NFL team selects a Man of the Year from their team. This individual is then eligible to be named the NFL Man of the Year. Selected by an NFL blue-ribbon panel, the winner is recognized for his outstanding commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
BYRON “WHIZZER” WHITE AWARD
Designed to honor an NFL player who has exemplified outstanding service to their community, the Byron “Whizzer” White Award was named after NFL Hall of Famer and Supreme Court Justice Byron White. Each year, players around the league nominate someone from their team to be considered for this national award. The 2005 Colts nominee is Linebacker David Thornton. In his 4th year with the Colts, Thornton has been an active member of the munity outreach efforts, donating his time and resources to organizations throughout Indiana and North Carolina. From participating in weekly community visits to donating ticket blocks to each Colts home game, Thornton truly exemplifies a man with a heart for the community.
