GAME 7 - Houston Texans 19, BROWNS 16 - Oct. 30 at Houston (70,064)
BROWNS' MINDSET GOING IN: Looking to break a two-game losing streak, the Browns surely felt good about their chances against the 0-6 Houston Texans - even on the road. The Texans had done little well heading into the matchup against the Browns. They had lost by margins of 15, 20, 6, 14, 32 and 18 during their six 2005 contests. The Browns, meanwhile, had just come off of a home loss to Detroit they knew they should have won.
WHAT HAPPENED: In probably the most embarrassing moment of the ‘05 season (next to the team's 41-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 24), the club allowed Houston to get one of only two wins on the season. Each team marked a first-quarter touchdown, and the Browns even led after one frame, 10-7. And even though the Browns out-gained the Texans 325 to 237, the Browns fumbled twice and failed to produce in the red zone. The first fumble came at the Houston 17-yard-line. The second fumble led to the game-winning field goal by Kris Brown. The Browns had a final chance to get a field goal and tie the game, but a third-down sack of Trent Dilfer drove the Browns out of reasonable field goal range.
THE GOOD: The Browns defense held the Texans to a 3.2 yards-per-carry average on the ground and Texans QB David Carr to 138 yards passing. Droughns, meanwhile rushed for 99 yards on 20 carries and Antonio Bryant had 98 yards on 4 catches. Phil Dawson was 3-of-3 on field goals, bringing his streak of consecutive field goals made to start the season to 13.
THE BAD: The team scored a touchdown once in four red zone chances and converted 3-of-12 third downs. Through 7 games, the Browns scored 2 touchdowns in 14 red zone opportunities and converted 25-of-79 third downs (31.6 percent). Kyle Richardson's 19-yard punt following the Browns' opening drive led to the Texans' lone touchdown of the day.
WHAT THE BROWNS LEARNED: That "On any given Sunday in the NFL..."And if you don't bring your best, you won't come out on top. Not as if the 2-4 Browns were big favorites on the road, but they certainly expected - and said so after the game - to beat the lowly Texans. Turns out the game wasn't a turnaround for Houston. Their only other win of the season came seven weeks later vs. Arizona. notas_de_prensa_archivo
