NEW YORK POLICE: POLICE COMMISSIONER NAMES OCCB CHIEF ZEIGLER AS HEAD OF EXPANDED COMMUNITY AFFAIRS BUREAU

/noticias.info/ Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly announced the appointment today of Douglas Zeigler as Chief of a revitalized and expanded Community Affairs Bureau. It is the first time that Community Affairs will be headed by a uniformed chief."As the Police Department continues its dual mission of combating conventional crime and terrorism, the importance of community affairs in solidifying public support and cooperation with both missions has never been more important,"Commissioner Kelly said. "Community Affairs also needed to be reenergized in a significant way."" No one is better qualified nor better experienced to tackle the task at hand than Doug Zeigler who has a proven track record of outstanding management performance and leadership

in his oversight of the Organized Crime Control Bureau and the Housing Bureau," Commissioner Kelly said. Chief Zeigler, a lawyer with 33 years is currently the head of the Organized Crime Control Bureau. Effective February 1, Chief Zeigler will take command of a greatly expanded Community Affairs Bureau with the shift of 4,500 police officers and school safety agents from the Patrol Services Bureau. This addition of the School Safety Division to Community Affairs will make the bureau one of the Department's largest.

" This added operational responsibility formally recognizes the important relationship between schools and communities and the Police Department," Commissioner Kelly said.

Chief Zeigler began his career in the Housing Police Department in November 1973 and began his career on patrol in Police Service Area 2. He was promoted to Sergeant in June 1982; Sergeant Special Assignment
in November 1983; Lieutenant in September 1984; Lieutenant Special Assignment in May 1985; Captain in November 1988; Deputy Inspector in December 1990; Inspector in May 1992; Deputy Chief in December 1994; Assistant Chief in December 1997; and Chief of Housing Bureau in July 1999.

Before the merger of the Housing Police with the NYPD, Chief Zeigler served as the Housing Police Department's Chief of Patrol and Department Advocate. In the NYPD, he served as Executive Officer of Patrol
Borough Queens South, and Commanding Officer of Police Service Areas 2, 3, and 8, and of Patrol Borough Queens North.

Chief Zeigler holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master's degree from John Jay College, and a law degree from New York Law School. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1982. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Chief Zeigler is married to Neldra M. Zeigler, the Deputy Commissioner of Equal Employment Opportunity, and they are the parents of a son: Nalik. notas_de_prensa_archivo
