Vettel wins at Hockenheim

Four days after his final written exam, German driver Sebastian Vettel (ASM Formule 3) scored his first-ever win in the Formula 3 Euro Series at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. Guillaime Moreau (Signature-Plus) and Esteban Guerrieri (Manor Motorsport) joined the 18-year old on the podium.

Already on the first lap, Sebastian Vettel took the lead, but only one lap later, he locked up under braking for the hairpin. Paul di Resta (ASM Formule 3) went past the German. Two laps later, the Scot made a mistake as he spun into the barriers without any outside influence. Thus, Vettel was in the lead again. Later on, Kamui Kobayashi (ASM Formule 3) was waiting for a chance behind Vettel, but then the Japanese also made a mistake. Guillaume Moreau, Esteban Guerrieri and Kohei Hirate (Manor Motorsport), the winner of the day before, overtook Kobayashi, who dropped back to fifth.

In the newly-created Formula 3 Euro Series Trophy, Julian Theobald (SMS Seyffarth Motorsport) claimed victory after an exciting battle with Anthony Janiec (Janiec Racing Team).

Sebastian Vettel (ASM Formule 3)
“My first victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series is a great feeling. The track was very cold, so that it was extremely difficult to get the tyres up to the right temperature. Therefore, I probably had the worst lock-up in my career early on. Paul di Resta’s retirement allowed me to take the lead again soon after that. I had to fight hard to defend it until the end.”

Guillaume Moreau (Signature-Plus)
“Second place is a good consolation at the end of this weekend. After a bad start on Friday, at least today’s result is good. It was great fun, although it wasn’t easy, because there was a lot of dirt on the track and it was accordingly slippery.”

Esteban Guerrieri (Manor Motorsport)
“My strategy was to overtake as many cars as possible at the start, then make it through the first couple of laps and then see how far I could go up to the front. That worked out quite well. I am very happy with third place.”

Kohei Hirate wins season opener

Japanese driver, Kohei Hirate (Manor Motorsport) won the action-packed season opener of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. After 22 laps, he had an advantage of 2.4 seconds on his fellow-countryman Kazuki Nakajima (Manor Motorsport). This was the first victory for a Japanese driver in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Paul di Resta (ASM Formule 3) completed the first podium of the season after finishing third.

The season opener started off with plenty of action: Michael Herck (Bas Leinders Junior Racing Team) stalled at the start. Bruno Fechner (SMS Seyffarth Motorsport) couldn’t avoid the stranded car and ran into the rear of Fechner’s car. After first examinations, Fechner only turned out to have bruises.

Just before the end of the safety car intervention after the startline accident, Esteban Guerrieri (Manor Motorsport) ran into the back of Kohei Hirate’s car, damaging his own front spoiler. At the re-start, Hirate defended his leading position from Giedo van der Garde (ASM Formule 3) and Kazuki Nakajima. On lap 13, Van der Garde retired from the race after a racing incident. Thus, Nakajima took over second place, while Paul di Resta moved up into third. The battle for fourth place saw Guillaume Moreau (Signature-Plus) come out on top ahead of Sebastian Vettel (ASM Formule 3) from Heppenheim.

Victory in the new Formula 3 Euro Series Trophy went to Julian Theobald (SMS Seyffarth Motorsport) from Anthony Janiec (Janiec Racing Team).

Kohei Hirate (Manor Motorsport)
“At the re-start after the safety car, I backed off a little bit to confuse my rivals. Esteban didn’t pay attention and hit my rear wheel. My tyre was slightly damaged. Fortunately, it lasted until the end of the race.”

Kazuki Nakajima (Manor Motorsport)
“I am overjoyed. Finishing second in my first-ever race in Europe is just great. After the re-start, Esteban dropped back. Then, Giedo was in front of me and I only waited for him to make a mistake.”

Paul di Resta (ASM Formule 3)
“Third place is a good result. Compared to yesterday, the handling of my car was much better, although today, it wasn’t easy to drive either. Anyway, I scored some important points for the championship standings of the Formula 3 Euro Series.”
