MLB: ROCKIES: Atkins named NL Player of the Week

/noticias.info/ Colorado Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins, who led the league with 20 total bases, has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for April 3-9, 2006. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Atkins also was tied for the league lead with 12 hits, eight runs, five doubles and six extra-base hits. Over six games Garrett batted .462 (12-for-26) with one home run and seven RBI. He put together three multi-hit games last week, including a career-high four-hit performance on April 9th at San Diego. The right-handed hitter compiled a .769 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage to help lead the Rockies to a 4-2 record and a tie for the NL West division lead.

Other nominees this past week included Atkins' Colorado teammate Jason Smith (.563, 3 HR, 7 RBI); Atlanta's Andruw Jones (.310, 2 HR, 12 RBI), Ryan Langerhans (.444, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Edgar Renteria (.387, 1 HR, 10 RBI); Xavier Nady (.474, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and David Wright (.474, 2 HR, 9 RBI) of the New York Mets; Milwaukee's Carlos Lee (.378, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Derrick Turnbow (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 SV); Sergio Mitre (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 5 SO) and Hanley Ramirez (.429, 4 R, 3 RBI) of the Marlins; Michael Barrett (.316, 2 HR, 9 RBI), Ronny Cedeno (.556, 4 2B, 3 R), Derrek Lee (.375, 3 HR, 6 RBI) and Todd Walker (.429, 3R, 3 RBI) of the Chicago Cubs; Albert Pujols (.300, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Scott Rolen (.375, 2 HR, 7 RBI) of the Cardinals; Houston's Lance Berkman (.381, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and Preston Wilson (.304, 3 HR, 6 RBI); Brad Penny (2-0, 1.50 ERA, 14 SO) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Arizona's Claudio Vargas (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 SO); Bobby Abreu (.409, 1 HR, 6 RBI) of the Phillies; Pittsburgh's Jose Castillo (.417, 1 HR, 5 RBI); and San Francisco's Omar Vizquel (.429, 5 R, 5 RBI).
