NASCAR: RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING: Burton is back in business with RCR
A bumper sticker taught Jeff Burton the fickle nature of his business.
/noticias.info/ "I left Pocono one day after a tough race. (Dale) Earnhardt was having a tough year and someone had on the back of their car: 'Time to cash in the 401(k), Earnhardt,' " Burton said. "Seven-time champion. If the patience level for a seven-time champion is that, what's the patience level for me."
So when Burton, who finished fifth or better in Nextel Cup points from 1997 to 2000, left an established ride in the No. 99 Ford at Roush Racing late in the 2004 season to take over a struggling No. 31 Chevrolet at a struggling Richard Childress Racing, he knew he could be written off into oblivion. Then in his 12th season, and winless since 2001, he was painted as another almost-made-it who would fizzle and fade into the field of drivers who get in the way of the real contenders. Carl Edwards' immediate success - five top 10s in 13 races - replacing Burton made things look even worse as Burton tried to rebuild a program that had gone fallow with driver Robby Gordon.
