ABOUT THE RACE . . .
Terry Cook and the No. 10 Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International race team won Saturday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race at Kansas Speedway. The win was ppc Racing’s first-career NCTS victory and Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International’s first win since dominating the NCTS race at Indianapolis Raceway Park back in August 2002. The team heads to Kentucky Speedway next week now sixth in the NCTS driver points standings, 34 points out of fifth place.
TRACKING THE NO. 10 FORD POWER STROKE DIESEL BY INTERNATIONAL RACE TEAM . . .
In early in the race, the No. 10 Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International race truck looked solid after starting fifth. Driver Terry Cook moved up to second place and was closing in on the leader Mike Skinner when a right-front tire went down on Lap 16.
Cook limped around the 1.5-mile speedway and luckily made it to pit road without any damage. The pit crew jumped over the wall and quickly changed right-side tires while the race continued under the green.
“We have these bead blowers and run a hose that blows cool air on the sidewall of the tire to keep them cool,” said Cook in Victory Lane. “Unfortunately, they're wrapped with wire inside and I think a piece of wire got in the tire and cut it down. We pitted under green and lost a lap and then got it back through the Lucky Dog to restart 32nd (on Lap 44) and drove all the way up to 11th (by Lap 77).”
Cook was right on the money and never gave up as Crew Chief, Dennis Connor and spotter, Tony Hirschman III radioed to Cook encouraging words and said to focus back on moving back up to the front.
After Cook got his lap back, he began to pass the other competitors, some two and three a lap. By Lap 77, Cook was running 11th and a threat to return to the top 10.
The Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International race team went to work once again, this time knocking off a 15.5 sec pit stop on Lap 80 to gain Cook four positions on pit road.
“I have a great pit crew,” said Cook. “They gave me great pit stops and what a great strategy by Dennis Connor there at the end. I think a lot of teams thought they needed to take tires later and we saw early on in the race that tires weren't that big of an issue. Our truck was so good all weekend long. Once we got the lead and in clean air, we were just unstoppable."
Cook restarted seventh on Lap 84 and made his final pit stop of the race on Lap 105 but it was not until Lap 127 that Cook first took the lead when the leaders hit pit road. From there, no one had a chance at the No. 10 Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International race truck as Cook led the final 41 laps en route to a well-deserved and overdue victory.
“Man, this is huge,” said Cook. “The competition level has gotten so tough in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and we've been so good on the mile-and-a-half tracks. To finally put it all together is huge. ppc Racing has built some great trucks and we've skated on the verge of winning and we just couldn’t seem to get over the hump but today we did. We did it, we did it, we did it.
"I was trying to get my knees to stop from knocking in the closing laps. It's been so long since I’ve been to Victory Lane. I knew during the off-season when we hired Dennis Connor that we were building a championship-caliber team. He saw on that last run that the guys who had sticker tires and the guys in front of me that were on older tires were all having a hard time getting around. At that point, I felt Dennis made the right call on tires. This is a great win for the entire Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International race team.”
Cook moves up five positions in the NCTS driver points standings to sixth, 307 behind leader Todd Bodine. The win ends Cook’s 94-race winless streak and gives the team its sixth top-10 finish of the 2006 season. The NCTS heads to Kentucky Speedway next week for the Built Ford Tough 225 presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers, where Cook looks to make it two wins in a row.
