TIGER WOODS: Woods Starts With 66 in Weather-Delayed Buick Open
/noticias.info/ By Mark Soltau
GRAND BLANC, Mich. – Continuing his good play from the British Open, Tiger Woods birdied his first five holes Thursday and went on to shoot a 6-under-par 66 in the first round of the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club. He trails lefty Mike Weir of Canada, who shot 63.
“You know you are going to have to go low or else you are going to get run over,” said Woods. “You have to shoot something in the 60s, actually mid-60s just to keep pace.”
An early back nine starter with Brent Geiberger and Ian Leggatt, Woods reached the par-5 10h hole in two and managed to two-putt for a birdie, then went on a tear. Woods birdied the par-3 11th, par-4 12th, par-5 13th and par-4 14th holes and toured the side in 5-under 31.
After waiting for more than two hours to attempt his eagle putt on the first hole because of a weather delay, Woods two putted for his birdie at the par-5 first hole, then reeled off five-straight pars. Woods got to 7-under for the round with another birdie at the par-5 seventh, but bogeyed the par-3 eighth after finding a greenside bunker. He parred No. 9 to shoot a 1-under 35 on the front.
“You make bogey on this course and you feel like you lost a couple shots,” Woods said.
Woods hit 83 percent of the greens and 64 percent of the fairways in regulation and used 30 putts. He also averaged 306 yards in driving distance, using driver only a couple times.
“Even though the wind is blowing, the greens are soft and guys are flying at every flag,” said Woods.
As a result of a second weather delay of 96 minutes, less than half of the field completed the first round. They will finish their rounds early Friday morning, followed by the start of the second round. notas_de_prensa_archivo
