US OPEN: Jankovic Claims First Round Win Over Dulko

First it was Gisela Dulko. Then it was Jelena Jankovic. During the two-and-a-half hour first-round match Monday night, both women took turns dominating the court. Dulko won the first set 7-6 and 19th seed Jankovic won both the second and third sets, 6-1 and 6-4, respectively.
In the beginning it looked as if the 21-year-old Jankovic was going to own the match since Dulko had trouble hitting the ball over the net. But Jankovic, who is often referred to as “Monica Seles’ heiress,” began to look somewhat tired towards the end of the first set, which allowed the 21-year-old Argentinean-born Dulko to claim the lead in a grueling tiebreaker.
Both women wore serious game faces and were much quieter than their adoring fans cheering “Go Gisela” and “Let’s go Jelena” in the stands. But it was late in the third set when things got interesting. The Serbia and Montenegro native Jankovic was up 5-4 and was growing increasingly frustrated with the umpires’ calls. She loudly argued that they “made a lot of mistakes, on both sides,” causing the crowd to chime in. Perhaps instant replay should be installed on all courts!
However, in the end Jankovic threw her fist up in the air acknowledging her victory. She will face 20-year-old Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium in the notas_de_prensa_archivo
