PGA: Howell: Ryder Cup was springboard

David Howell, who used to be in awe of Ryder Cup players when he played against them on the European Tour, is hoping to play a major role at the K Club this weekend.

Howell, who helped the European team retain the trophy in Detroit two years ago, said: "I always used to look at the members of the Ryder Cup team in a slightly different way on the tour, and becoming one of those did feel slightly different. It certainly stood me in good stead.

"I'm looking forward to hopefully playing a slightly larger role than last time. The main thing is that we keep that beautiful gold trophy here and whatever the captain thinks is what we accept."

Much has been made of the American team containing four rookies - Europe have two in Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson - but Howell revealed how Europe's debutants overcame their first tee nerves at Oakland Hills.

"The best thing we did two years ago was have the four rookies watch everybody tee off that first morning," added Howell.

"We watched the first eight players tee off and I think only one person hit the fairway! That certainly calmed us down, we couldn't do any worse than that.

"That was our attitude off the first tee and sure enough, I think some of us might have done slightly better." notas_de_prensa_archivo
