TIGER WOODS: Lehman Sends Out Woods-Furyk First in 36th Ryder Cup Match
/noticias.info/ By Mark Soltau
STRAFFAN, Ireland – As expected, United States captain Tom Lehman selected Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to go out first Friday in Fourball (best-ball) competition in the opening match of the 36th Ryder Cup at The K Club. The duo will oppose Europe’s Colin Montgomerie and local favorite Padraig Harrington at 8 a.m. local time, 3 a.m. eastern.
“We’re excited, both of us,” Woods said Thursday. “We have got two of Europe’s best on the first day, so it will be a fun match and hopefully we’ll be able to get it started and get some momentum on our side going out early.”
Woods and Furyk, ranked first and second in the world, respectively, had good success playing together last year in the Presidents Cup, compiling a 2-0-1 record. Both are hard-nosed grinders competing on their fifth Ryder Cup teams and excel under pressure.
“I think we get along well,” Furyk said. “I enjoy his company. I enjoy his sense of humor. I had fun with him at the Presidents Cup. We had never played together. That was our eighth team together, counting Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. We haven't had the opportunity.
“But our mentalities are a lot the same. Length is not an issue. We attack a lot of those holes similar ways. We read putts very similarly. You know, I think our thought processes are a lot alike. Obviously he can attack the golf course from different angles than I can because of his length and power, and that also helps because we get into four ball type of competition, we're playing some holes differently, and in different styles. So we have some similarities, we have some differences, and we get along pretty well.”
In the second Fourball match, Stewart Cink and rookie J.J. Henry of the U.S. will oppose Paul Casey and Robert Karlsson of Europe; followed by David Toms and Brett Wetterich of the U.S. against Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal of Europe; and Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco of the U.S. veresus Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood of Europe.
Following the morning matches, four Foursomes (alternate shot) matches will be played in the afternoon. notas_de_prensa_archivo
